Healthy Schools: Programs

Fitness & Strength Testing

Beginning in the fall of 2006, we tested the height and weight of all Huntington county 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. We then calculated an average BMI for the county, as well as each school and each grade. We also tested students muscular strength and endurance via a 1 minute pushup test. This data was also used to find averages for each school and grade. This testing will be repeated twice per year, in the fall and spring, for 3 years.

This information is kept confidential, and will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of our current wellness programs.

Education Wellness Team

Beginning in the Fall of 2006, HCCSC created an Education Wellness Team to implement and oversee wellness activities within the school corporation.  Walking and exercise clubs have been established at each of the elementary schools and each school has provided a location to walk and is assisting the students in keeping track of the number of miles they have walked.

Swim and Fitness for 3rd Grade

In conjunction with the Huntington Family YMCA, all third graders can participate in a swim and fitness activity during school.  The school corporation busses the children to the YMCA to learn about the importance of fitness, health and proper nutrition. Yoga, dance, and aerobics are taught as well as circuit strength training.  The swim portion of the program is 3 hours of swimming and water safety lessons.  Students will also be able to experience the benefits of exercise.  Students will become healthier, reducing obesity and eating right.
